ASBOG

The road to becoming a licensed geologist is rocky one......

Ok, bad jokes aside---Geologists are in huge demand right now especially in mining and oil/gas exploration. If you are considering the career path or have already finished your geology degree, I would strongly suggest sitting for the ASBOG Exam.

Not all states have a designation for a license, check with your individual state regarding license or registration. The National Association of State Boards of Geology does not register geologist, but develops the standardized tests to measure aptitude.

Each state has different requirements for qualification check with your state to determine their requirements for testing. Also, fees, scheduling, and filing deadlines are different as well. Often you will need transcripts and letters of recommendation. The test is given in the spring and fall of each year, make sure you meet your state deadline for application and get your ducks in a row for testing so as not to miss the nearest date.

The test is broken down in to 2 sections: The Fundamentals of Geology(FG) which is 140 questions over 4 hours & The Practice of Geology(PG) which is 110 questions over 4 hours. They are scored separately. The "FG" exam usually goes from 8 to 12 in the morning and the "PG" from 1 to 5 in the afternoon.

The test is multiple choice and all questions should be answered. The ASBOG gives the states a scaled score from 70 to 100 to indicate a passing range, but it is the sole discretion of each state to determine their standards. Results are usually produced by the ASBOG in 60 days. If you fail the test, you will get a report showing a (+ )for areas that you are competent and a (-) for areas you need to improve.
